Are you wondering what to do when your teen  turns 15 years old?  If so, teens may take the Driver’s Education course and receive their permit, but must wait until they turn 16 years old to get drivers license.

You can start anytime after you turn age 15.  Just follow the steps below!

Step One: Take Driver's Education at East Texas Driving School.  We offer a non-traditional approach… hands-on-learning with new innovative methods… no more lectures.  Permit tests will be given after the third day of class.  On the first Wednesday of class, students must remain 30 minutes after class for permit testing.

Step Two: Obtain Your Permit From the DMV To obtain a Permit, you will receive your DL 964 Form (green form) from East Texas Driving School.  You will also get with your DL 40 and DL 14A (application for your permit), which should be completed, but do not sign your signature until you are at the DMV.  Students must return to class after they have obtained their permit to complete the remainder of the course.  If not, their permits will be cancelled.

You will also take the VOE Form (Verification of Enrollment) from your high school, original birth certificate and social security card – no copies.

At the DMV you will need to perform a vision test, fingerprint and take a photograph for your permit.  The cost for a permit is $16.00 for teens.

If you have signed up for classroom and driving, you will start your driving lessons after you receive your permit.  Drive times will be scheduled by the instructor.  In cases of inclement weather, drive times will be rescheduled.

Step Three: Driver's Training (Behind-The-Wheel) Driver's Training is accomplished in a vehicle with a licensed DMV instructor. It can be taken any day of the week with an appointment.  Keep in mind though; we will not schedule a teenager who does not currently possess a valid permit. In-car driving will include 7 hours of driving and 7 hours of observation; only if you choose to take the classroom and driving portion with us. Parents will be required to do the additional 20 hours of driving. East Texas Driving School will provide the necessary driving log you will need to take to the DPS office for the additional  20 hours of driving that is required.

Step Four: Practice, Practice, Practice! You must be 16 years old and have completed at least 34 hours of driving, (10 hours of which are at night) with a licensed driver over the age of 21 years old in order to be eligible for your provisional license. The DMV will require your parent or guardian's to have a driving log on the number of hours you have driven with your parents as proof you have done the required hours to receive your permit.  You must also hold your permit for a minimum of 6 months before you are eligible to receive a license.

Step Five: Take the DMV Behind-the-Wheel Test! All teens must take the DPS road test to obtain a driver’s license after their 6 month waiting period is complete.  The day before your 6 month waiting period expires, please contact the East Texas Driving School if you wish to receive a brief refresher course on your driving skills( for class/driving students only).  Upon completion of your refresher course, you can schedule your behind-the-wheel test.  To schedule your test you can go to DPS between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. or from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday.

For further information you may contact the Marshall DPS Office at 903-938-2171.
